CHANDRAYAAN

Chandrayaan is the name of the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) lunar exploration program. The word “Chandrayaan” means “Moon Vehicle” or “Moon Journey” in Sanskrit. The program aims to explore the Moon and conduct scientific experiments to enhance our understanding of Earth’s natural satellites.

CHANDRAYAAN-1

Launched on October 22, 2008, was India’s first lunar mission. It included an orbiter and an impactor probe called the Moon Impact Probe (MIP), which was released to crash into the Moon’s surface. The orbiter carried several scientific instruments to study the lunar surface and atmosphere.

One of the notable achievements of Chandrayaan-1 was the discovery of water molecules on the Moon. The Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3), an instrument on board the orbiter, detected water ice in the permanently shadowed regions of the lunar poles.

CHANDRAYAAN-2

Launched on July 22, 2019, was a more ambitious mission that consisted of an orbiter, a lander named Vikram, and a rover called Pragyan. The mission aimed to perform a soft landing on the lunar surface near the south pole and deploy the rover to conduct scientific experiments.

However, during the landing attempt on September 7, 2019, communication with the lander was lost, and it crash-landed on the Moon’s surface. Despite the landing setback, the orbiter continues to function and gather valuable data about the Moon’s surface and atmosphere.

Chandrayaan-3

Launched on 14 July 2023 at 2:34 PM. It is expected to be a follow-up to Chandrayaan-2 and focus on another attempt at a soft landing and rover deployment on the lunar surface.

The Chandrayaan program reflects India’s commitment to space exploration and scientific research. It has contributed significantly to our knowledge of the Moon and has inspired future space missions in the country.
